Squamous cell advice

Hi I am extremely anxious as I have an appointment to see dermatology about suspected SCC. When I originally saw my doctor she said it was nothing to worry about so I left it but by chance mentioned it to another dr and they have referred me. I am nervous because its been there so long.and worry its spread. Itnis on my leg and approx 1cm. Can anyone share any advice on similar incidents?

  • Hi,

I'm sorry you are going through this worrying time. It's good that your doctor has referred you to dermatology as they will be able to tell you if it's anything suspicious and they may need to remove it for a biopsy to ensure the diagnosis.

I don't have any personal experience of SCC, only melanoma and BCC, however I do know that SCC only has the ability to spread if it's been left for a considerably long time without removal, much longer than a malignant mole (melanoma) would take to spread. It's the second most common type of skin cancer and the vast majority of them can be successfully treated so yours will hopefully be the same. This link to the MelanomaUK charity website explains about SCC in more detail. Good luck and please let us know how you get on www.melanomauk.org.uk/.../faqs

  • Hi.

Mine actually turned out to be myofibroma so please try not to panic. Easier said than done i know. I think it really depends on how fast it grows. Mine hadnt really changed in size over a couple of years and the doctor said thats a big factor. I hope everything goes ok.
