Diagnosed this week - life changing operation next week

Hi everyone, I'm Peter, 40 and from the West Coast of Scotland.. I'm married with 4 sons, youngest has just turned 16. Im. A Mental Health Nurse working as a lecturer tknpre reg nurses.

I have just been diagnosed with cancer of the Glottis and the treatment is a total Laryngectomy. It is a T4a N3c tumour.

Is there anyone here that has had, or came through this type of cancer and total Lartngectomy?

  • Hello Peter

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It's obviously an incredibly difficult time for you at the moment and I hope that you're well supported by those around you ahead of your surgery next week.

I've had a look through the posts on the forum and I can't see that we have any members currently active who have had this diagnosis but I can see that [@Ginpo]‍ mentioned that her husband had cancer of the glottis. As I've tagged her in on my reply to you hopefully she will see your message and respond.

We do have some posts where laryngectomy is mentioned, although none of them are particularly recent. You can find them using the forum search function and it may be helpful to have a look at some of the posts.

There are quite a number of members here on the forum who have had various types of oral cancers and I will say they are a very supportive group. I'd suggest posting a reply on this thread and I'm sure that you will get some responses from the members there who have been through various surgeries and treatments.

In addition to all this, I wanted to give you the links to some information on our website here which may be useful after your surgery, and also here where there are some links to places where you can access more specific support.

If you wanted to speak to one of our nurses before next week you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. Alternatively, we have an Ask the Nurses topic area that you can post in and one of the team will be happy to try and help with advice, information, and support.

I hope that this helps a little Peter. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on. I'm sure that the community will do its best to support you.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
