Shell shocked kidney cancer diagnosis

Dear all

My husband went for an MRI scan 2 weeks ago as he had sciatica and weight loss, it revealed a cloudy patch on his chest area and abdomen area.  Roll on another 6 days and he was sent for a CT scan, had to go alone because of COVID.

He came home today and said that he had a blood clot on his right lung and a tumour on his right kidney a well as high blood pressure.  All the blood tests came back normal.

Tuesday we have the biopsy.  Feeling terrified and shocked as this was an incidental finding due to back sciatica issues, which he has had for years.  Waiting for the GP to call.  He is a typically British stiff upper lip so acting fairly normally.

Would welcome your experiences and what to expect - just hope he has the kidney removed as that feels the safest option.

  • Hello Posie,

I just wanted to welcome you to our forum. I hope everything goes well on Tuesday. We have information on the kidney biopsy on this page which I hope you will find useful. You can also find out more about kidney cancer here and if you wanted to talk to our nurses at any point or had any questions, feel free to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope your husband is feeling OK even though as you said from the outside he has carried on acting fairly normally. Has the GP called and was the conversation with the doctor productive? Have you found out more about his treatment options and whether he will have the kidney removed?

Hopefully you will hear from other members of this forum who have been diagnosed with kidney cancer and they will be along shortly to share their experiences with you. I've had a little look using our search function (which is located on the blue banner at the top) and have found for example [@GARYAS]‍ who mentioned on this thread that he had his kidney removed in December 2020 so he could be a good person for you to chat to. If you type in the keywords 'kidney cancer' in our search function, you will see other past relevant threads on the subject and feel free to respond to any you feel you would like to engage with.

I hope you find out more about your husband's treatment options and that he can start treatment soon.

    Best wishes,
