DCIS

Hi to you all,

A very quick question as someone just diagnosed with DCIS.

Can I ask has anyone been treated under local anasetic?

Many thanks and wishing you all well

  • Hi Rachcc.....I can only relate my own experience and my lumpectomy was done under a general anaesthetic. In and out of hospital the same day and then 15 sessions of daily radiotherapy over 3 weeks, Monday to Friday once the surgery was healed.

I'll be happy to answer any other questions you might have.....good luck...Irene x

  • Irene,

Many thanks for replying to me much appreciated and hope you are doing well.

Think still shocked and confused as told caught early but then straight into treatment...

Can I ask is radiotherapy routine?

    Thanks snd best wishes Rachel

  • Hi Rachel....Your feelings are normal but what is important to remember is that DCIS is totally contained in the milk duct, is not invasive, is not life threatening and is totally treatable. I never lost sight of these facts during my treatment. It's normal to go straight into treatment. I was diagnosed December 2017, lumpectomy January 2018 and radiotherapy February/March

As I understand it it is graded low, medium and high (1,2 and 3) and follow up treatment depends on the grade. Mine was high grade hence the radiotherapy.  Sometimes with the lower grades the lumpectomy is enough. Mine was in a cluster so easily targeted and dealt with. If it's spread more widely in he breast then treatment can be different. Be guided by your medical team. I totally trusted mine and the surgeon said I would be cured when treatment was finished. They don't say that easily with cancer.

I'm now on a patient led follow up programme. They don't send for me but they're at the end of the phone if I have the slightest worry about anything. I also have the reassurance of annual mammograms for five years. I've just had my third and everythings good.

Wshing you luck with your treatment. Sending hugs and let me know how things go..... love Irene xx

  • Irene - thanks so much that helps a lot.

My team seem great and did tell me my DCIS is in a cluster too.

So glad to hear you are doing well and sending hugs back.

    Will be in touch.

    Thanks again and best wishes

    Rachel
