Father just diagnosed - NO symptoms aside lump on neck

So... I found out last night that my Dad (57) has been diagnosed with cancer.

(I found out a few weeks ago that he's got this lump on his neck that's been there for around 18 months and he's done NOTHING about it. Part of me is really angry/disappointed - especially given my Mum knew and didn't make him go to the doctor. I wish she'd told me and I would have got him to go... 18 ******* months.)

The lump on his neck is apparently a lymph node - 5cm by 5cm so, it's now quite visible. He's been to an ENT and they found nothing of interest. He has NO symptoms, no weight loss, no night sweats - nothing except for the lump on his neck.

The CT and MRI have also shown... nothing. There's a small lump on one of the adrenal glands, but not really sure if that's it s as above... no symptoms whatsoever.

He had some prostate issues a few years ago but his levels are all fine so I have no idea what to think.

The doctor who informed him seemed surprised by all of the above. He's got to have another full body MRI, I'd guess in the next two weeks but...

I don't know what to think. Has anyone else ever experienced something similar?

I'm lost. :(

  • Hi [@TheLuckOf1000Stars]‍

So sorry to hear of your Dad's diagnosis.

I wanted to reply as I experienced a similar situation with my Mum.

She had an ear infection which she received some anti-biotics for and it seemed to all clear up. A few months later, a lump appeared on her neck on the same side as the ear that had been infected. No one was concerned, including her doctor, as she had no other symptoms. We all just thought the lump was from the prior ear infection. She was fit and active, still working and living her life exactly as normal. She was sent for a biopsy of the lump anyway to be safe and was diagnosed with cancer.

It's scary isn't it how cancer can be so silent. That's what I can't get my head around; the shock of such a sudden diagnosis when they don't look or feel sick.

Thinking of you and your family during this difficult time.

    Take care

  • I'm sorry to hear of diagnosis and understand the emotions

I was treated a couple of years ago and it took me quite a few visits to the GP to get a referral and then I was misdiagnosed with flux before eventually back to ENT and diagnosed with throat cancer
I had lump on neck but had to push to get GP to refer and back again to ENT for further tests

Surpised that CT/MRI scan shown nothing as that is where normally picks up every little thing

I kept a blog from the get go around my journey and have posted a link in the hope you find helpful

Please let me know if I can help in any way
