Dad diagnosed with suspected secondary cancer

Hello, I'm new to this and would really appreciate some advice and insight.

My Dad a super healthy and active 65 year old has just been told he is highly likely to have secondary cancer. He sustained a shoulder injury from a household accident and a hard lump developed on his collar bone. An initial x ray proved inconclusive and thought it was a fracture. A later CT scan has shown a cancerous legion there. My Dad has had no symptoms apart from this injury, hasn't lost weight has loads of energy and feels good. He has also had lots of blood tests which has come back normal. He has just had a full body CT scan and we are awaiting the results.

I'm terrified as I know secondary is incurable and they need to know where the primary cancer came from. There's a very small chance is a primary bone cancer but they said this is unlikely. I'm an only child and can't imagine loosing my Dad.

has anyone been in a similar situation diagnosis wise?

thanks in advance x

  • Hello Chrissy4075

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's recent accident and that as a result of this it's suspected that he has secondary cancer. I can understand that this will have come as a huge shock to you both and it's understandable that you're feeling worried and anxious about what the future holds.

Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long for the CT scan results and these will give more information to the Consultant who will be able to offer some answers to you both. Once more information is known they will be able to talk to your Dad about treatment options. I know at this stage it's an incredibly scary place to be. It sounds positive that your Dad is otherwise in good health and we do have a number of members here on the forum who have been living with advanced cancer for quite some time.

I'd encourage you to give our team of nurses a call. I'm sure they will be happy to talk things through with you and offer any advice, information, and support that they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Chrissy and let us know how things go. We can then help with more specific information and support.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn

Thank you so much for your supportive message. We have had a little bit of good news that his full body CT scan came back completely clear apart from the legion on his collar bone. (nothing on major organs or any other part of the bone) He has been referred to a top bone specialist.

I'm still concerned there's a small chance it still could be secondary but have a little more hope. His Father had to have half of his thumb removed because of a bone cancer so possibly could be genetic.

I will definitely give one of the nurses a call thank you so much!

  • Hi Chrissy

That sounds like it's really positive news! Hopefully the Specialist will be able to give e you both more reassurance.

You might want to give our nurses a call ahead of that appointment. I'm sure they'll be able to give you some questions that you/your Dad might want to ask the Consultant.

    Best wishes,
