BRAF negative melanoma

HI I have been told that my aggressive melanoma is BRAK negative

I understand that this means I will be limited for treatment and it does not have as good a prognosis and positive types

Can someone please advise me

Thanks

  • Hi Julie,

50% of melanoma patients are BRAF negative and the treatment is immunotherapy. The other 50%, BRAF positive patients, also have the option of targeted therapy which doesn't work if you don't have the BRAF mutation. However, swings & roundabouts, BRAF positive patients find their melanoma is quite often aggressive. Also, targeted therapy only tends to work for a finite period (sometimes a year) and then patients move onto immunotherapy. As your acral melanoma is, in itself, considered aggressive, being BRAF positive would have slammed you with a double dose of aggressiveness. So although it's upsetting to only have one type of treatment available, you will have a much better chance of it working without the extra aggressive burden. Don't lose heart, the immunotherapy drugs are showing great promise,
