Confused over Treatment Options

In March my husband was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.  PSA 17, Gleason 3+4 (7) Grade 2, T2c N0 M0.  We have been living on Corfu since last year.  The Urologist recommended surgery as he is 66, however the hospital closed its operation schedule due to covid.  In the meantime my husband has had to have a catheter fitted as he became unable to empty his bladder.  When the GP informed us he had heard that the hospital had commenced operations again at the end of May, we had to have all the scans done again to check for metastasis.  Thankfully everything was the same, except for his PSA which had gone up to 22.  The Urologist started him on hormone therapy 2 weeks ago, and the results of all the scans and biopsy etc were sent to the mainland hospital on Friday.  We got a shock this morning when the GP called us down to tell us that although the hospital said they could do the operation, the surgeon suggested my husband had a choice and could opt for radiation therapy and a continuation of the hormone therapy.  The language is a bit of a barrier but the gist seemed to be that either option carried a 90% success rate, and of course there are risks with both.  My husband has a slight heart problem which I guess adds to the complication of surgery.  So we are really confused now as to which road to go down.  We thought surgery was the only option but now it seems not.  Was anyone else just handed this decision to make themselves?  Has anyone made this decision and what did they base it on? thank you.

  • Hello Molliedot

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis and that you find yourself now having to make a treatment about which treatment would be the best option for him.

I know that we've members here on the forum who have had surgery for prostate cancer and some who have had radiotherapy and hormone treatment, so hopefully, some of them will post to share their experiences with you both.

We do have some information here on our website about treatment for prostate cancer which will hopefully help and of course, you're welcome to post in our Ask the Nurses topic area if you'd like to speak with them for further advice and information.

I hope that you have the support needed from his GP and the Consultant to make the right decision for him regarding the treatment. Keep in touch and let us know how you're both doing.

    Best wishes,
