Rectal/anal tumour advice please

Hi there, has anyone had a 5cm or larger tumour in rectum/anal that has turned out to be benign?

ive just had the news I have a 5.3x2.5cm tumour in my rectum/anal canal. CT with contrast and MRI show it has grown through wall of bowel. Liver looks clear. They are going to CT my lungs to check.

Biopsies of tumour will be taken in colonoscopy under general in a few days but I just wondered (clinging on to hope I suppose!) if ther could still be a chance this is benign? All my bloods, FIT test, Calprotectin have all been fine.

Despite pain I've had very few symptoms really compared to most.

Any advice or shared stories would be so appreciated. And any questions I should ask my surgeon.

thank you!

  • I'm really sorry about the tumour that's been found M. No doubt this will be a rather scary and anxious time until you know more but we're all thinking of you and will have our fingers crossed for good news.

I hope you hear back from some of our members soon but if you'd like to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I'm not sure if you've had a colonoscopy before, but if you haven't and would like to find out more, just click here.
