Cancer of the oesophagus.

Today I received the results of biopsies and CT scan.

Adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus.

High grade dysplasia with suspicion of invasive endocarcinoma on first lot of biopsies. 2nd endoscopy biopsies confirm the presence of endocarcinoma cancer cells.

tumour small - 1.5 - 2 cm.

CT doesn't show any spread to nearby organs but CT PET requested by consultant to check nodes etc.

currently looking at treatment options. Due to be discussed in MDT tomorrow.
treatment possibilities are 2 different surgical approaches to remove the cancer - open surgery to remove the affected part, endoscopy surgery to scrape the Tumour and 3rd option is Chemo/radiotherapy.
feel a little numb to be honest.

  • It seems a Whirlwind of facts to take in. I felt very overwhelmed

when I found out my diagnosis. My tumour is 6cm but after radiotherapy am due CT on Friday as now I can eat ok it must have done something although mine is inoperable it is treatable and I am feeling well so going out with my family an friends as much as I can. Sometimes feeling numb is good as too many emotions can blind us and to be honest you have options and please do not be afraid to ask your consultant about each option an after effects etc recovery. Write everything down that you want to ask, even the simplest of questions.
I hooe you have family or friends who you can open up too as their support helps so much but make sure any decisions you make are yours and not others as it is your health and well-being that matters. Only flaw with treatment at the moment has been having to rely on telephone appointments rather than face to face but hopefully that will change soon. Please stay positive and remember feeling sad doesn't do any harm now anctgen but much better to focus on the facts and they are that you have options that can enable you to get well again. Take care

  • Hi [@JaniceMe]‍

thank you so much for your reply. I have my PET CT next Wednesday and keeping everything crossed that it doesn't show anything else.

I'm a 53 year old mum of 4 Adult boys and grandmother to a gorgeous 20 month old granddaughter. I came back from the hospital Tuesday and it was one of my nana daycare days which was the best thing for me, because when I look after her Ihave no time to dwell.

i am petrified about what lies ahead. I think one of my battles will be whether I am considered fit enough for surgery, but I can't worry about that now otherwise it will eat away.

my only symptom was acid reflux - about 4 years which worsened a few months ago. I certainly didn't expect this diagnosis when I had my endoscopy - I thought maybe it would just show some form of ulcer.

I am so pleased for you that your treatment is having positive effects on your symptoms. Do you have more treatment planned?

    thank you again

  • Hi I am 65 on Weds with 3 gorgeous daughters an 6 grandchildren. Same here with the symptoms although did have continuous sore throat but expected for them to say narrowing which could be stretched so not expecting diagnosis. Did try chemo but unfortunately had rare side effects that meant I couldn't have it but please don't think this will be the same for you as I am the type of person who seems to get any side effect when it comes to anything medical! No I am not planning any more treatment for now as surgery was not an option as stomach nodes were too close to my aeorta an surgeon quite blunt an said I would not survive. And again yours us smaller an your prognosis is much better than mine and I would jump at the chance for rather possibility of a cure but I have accepted things and take every day that I am well as a blessing. I am open to having radiotherapy again to keep tumour shrunk so I can eat and drink so aiming to keep well both mentally and physically. I have put on half a stone in last 3 weeks as been able to eat everything lol.
I will be crossing my fingers an toes too but please stay positive and keep negative thoughts at bay as fighting this is as much about mental well-being as well as physical x

  • The level of numbness I felt when I was told I had cancer is wearing off.
I received copies letters that my gastro consultant had sent to my GP and then one to another surgeon (who I was being referred to to have the surgery done via endoscope /keyhole I think)

in the letter it said that the surgery option for a 'radical resection?'(full open surgeon) wouldn't be possible following the MDT meeting. It doesn't say why but I presume it is either because of my medical fitness for a long surgery, or if it is due to the location of the tumour (v.close to the oesophageal / gastric junction). I will make a call to my specialist liaison nurse on Monday to see if she can let me know. It wasn't ideal getting the letter on a Saturday morning.

mayve things will slot in to place after my PET CT on Wednesday.

I'm so sorry about your prognosis. Are you still feeling OK. You seem so accepting of what's happening. Did you have side effects from the radiotherapy.

my personality isn't great when things are up in the air. When I know what we are dealing with and what the plan is,I will then be able to cope a little better I hope.

thank you again for your replies
