What happens if the chemo doesn’t work?

Hi everyone started chemo last week so I'm getting to the end of my first week, what happens if the chemo doesn't work what if it doesn't shrink my tumour? And if it is working how long until im likely to notice a difference. Thanks xxxx

  • Hello Lizzy79

I think that many of our members here will understand the "but what if?" stage that comes after a cancer diagnosis. It's really common for people to be worried about how successful their treatment will be and what will happen if things don't go as planned.

It's possible that you may not notice any difference in the size of your tumour but this does not necessarily mean that the chemo isn't doing its job.

Please do speak to your chemo nurses or your breast care nurse about your concerns. I'm sure they will be able to give you some support and reassurance about things.

Alternatively, you're welcome to give our team of nurses a call to chat things through. I'm sure they will be able to offer some advice and support. They're available on 0808 800 4040 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm).

Try to keep in mind that the team treating you are experts and in their opinion, the treatment that you're receiving is the best way forwards. Take each day as it comes and try not to look too far ahead into the future.

Keep in touch Lizzy79 and let us know how you're getting on.

    Best wishes,

    Hi Lizzy,

Try not to worry about 'what if' just now and tell yourself that it will work. A positive attitude is a great help in situations like this. If it doesn't work for you, there are a number of different chemo options or even immunotherapy. Talk to your care team about your concerns.

Having said this, I sincerely hope that it will work for you. Please keep in touch and let us know, We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

We all have wobbles at times. I am glad to hear that both your doctor and nurse feel confident that this will work well for you.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.
