Recommendations for good wigs in Scotland

Hi,

Just wondering if people can give me some advice and tips on wigs! It's not something I ever thought I'd have to do. Chemo starting within 2wks and my google searches are just making me even more confused.

Wondering if people can tell me their experiences with wigs! Are real hair ones better than synthetic? And anyone in Scotland tell me a good place to go! I'm panicking that I'll leave it too late.

I'm 40 with long brown hair and wondering also if I should get it cut in to a short bob before I try the cold cap? I basically just need you lovely ladies to help meeeeeeeeee! Confused.com

Thank you xx

    hello I'm in Scotland too,

I started my chemotherapy yesterday I also have long hair, I had cold cap yesterday( obviously too early yet to let you know if it has worked) it's worth a try if you can tolerate it, I didn't find it too bad, took a couple of paracetamol half an hour before and conditioner on my hair when it was set up 20mins on prior to chemo one and hour hours after completing chemo xx

can't help with the wig situation as I'm hoping the cold cap works for me, if not I'll be following your thread xx

here if you need a chat

  • Hi

I know real hair ones are better, but they are expensive.

I have a synthetic one from from www.valentinewigs.co.uk/

If I liked it I was going to get more and possibly a real hair one.

I absolutely loved it, I even got a different colour to my normal hair and ordered another one straight away in a different style. The site is really good and cheaper than the other sites I found. I even sent one back as it didn't look right and had a refund. You get a VAT refund too if you are going through chemo.

However after all this I haven't been bothered to wear them!

Being bald its a lot more convenient or just covering my head with a cotton cap. I'd recommend getting some cotton caps as my head really hurt when my hair came out and it helped to sleep in. I didn't try the cold cap as I knew 2 people that suffered it and their hair fell out anyway and I had enough to worry about. I cut my hair really short and was so glad I did as when it came out (after my second chemo) It was everywhere and would have been more upsetting if it was longer. (I'd always had really long hair)

I don't want to add to your worries but my eyebrows came out and this was loads more upsetting than my hair. I'd recommended you get them microbladed before you start chemo, unfortunately It was lockdown when I started chemo and noone will do them when you are going through chemotherapy.

Whatever you decide I'm sure you'll rock your new look

  • Synthetic wigs are the best. They are lighter on the scalp. Real hair will be heavy on your head if it gets wet. I went to A&A studios Edinburgh. All the best for you xx also you don't pay for any wig you ordered. You will get a prescription to cover the cost of the wig....

  • Hi Lauren,

I have been wearing wigs for the oats 8 years. Nothing to do with chemo. I just happen to have alapecia so my hair won't  be growing back. Such is life!!

Anyway for what it's worth I have found synthetic wigs to be less bulky, lighter and far easier to manage. When they get wet they go back into their original shape. Real hair tends not to!! Plus they are cheaper too. I get a brilliant service from Trendco on line. (Their shops are in Brighton and London)

I honestly forget I wear a wig most of the time!! I swear by Ellen Willie wigs. They have good styles to choose from. Anyway take a look!!

    Wishing you well.
