Both parents have cancer

Hi, just wanting a bit of advice please

I have found out last month my mum has stage 4 lung cancer, she started target therapy but only lasted a week before being admitted in to hospital, she is now off the medication and the consultant is saying my mum is too fragile to be put through and other treatment.

Also my dad was admitted in to hospital a few days after my mum and I have just been told he has got aggressive pancreatic cancer ( they have not told me what stage  ), they are also saying as my dad is very ill with other things they can not provide any treatment.

I also work full time and am a single parent, my siblings do not live close.

I'm not sure what to do and where to turn to.

  • Hi Katyann,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm so sorry to hear of what you're going through at the moment. I can only imagine how incredibly tough this must be and it sounds as if you have an awful lot going on.

Hopefully you have the information you need from your mum and dad's medical teams - if not and you have any questions, do make sure you discuss these with them.

Initially it may be a case of taking things one day - or less - at a time, and doing what you can to look after yourself among everything going on. Keep speaking to others where you can - including using the forum here to write things down and reach out to others who understand.

In terms of additonal support, if you feel you're struggling then do have a look at Macmillan and Maggie's, who can both offer valuable resources.

We're always here for support on here whenever you may need it.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
