Long wait for diagnosis due to covid. Anyone else affected?

Hi

I am having a frightening experience due to recent diagnosis of Melanoma.   I had a new skin lesion which did not go away about a year ago.  I contacted my GP and forwarded photos.  I was referred to  Dermatology.  I received a letter last July to advise they were only dealing with the most urgent due to Covid.   As I had no further correspondence, I unfortunately assumed it was nothing to worry about.  Early this year I noticed the lesion has changed.    I eventually got an appointment at the Dermatology department and when I got the results of the biopsy unfortunately it was a melanoma.  I was devastated, after waiting all this time.  I am having further surgery.  Has anyone had such a delay in getting a biospy due to Covid.   I am hoping all will be good in the end.

  • Hi Ellie,

I'm so sorry you are in this situation. Although I have no personal experience of a diagnosis delay due to Covid I have heard of similar experiences. I know how worrying this is but hopefully the delay won't impact on the success of your excision treatment. I have been a melanoma patient for many years so I'm happy to chat if it helps. Good luck,

    Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient)

  • Hi Angie

Thanks for your reply and sorry to hear that you have had melanoma.  I was not expecting my diagnosis as on my first appointment after nearly a year waiting to be seen  there was no sense of urgency.  I was advised I could have the biopsy done or if I wished I could arrange to come back!  Fortunately I decided to have it done on the day.     I am writing to advise the need to chase up referrals to get a biopsy for suspect changes that stay permanent on the skin.

I am hopeful all will be well,

    Ellie
