Tonsil cancer

Good morning everybody, I am still in shock at somebody telling me I have cancer, and all the people I have met so far is so overwhelming, I'm so nervous for myself and my family.  I have cancer in 1 tonsil they are pretty certain it hadn't spread anywhere else which I am so thankful for, having a panendoscopy done this week then will see how big this is, but have been told I will need the tonsil removed and 1cm either side of the tumor and possible some of the tongue, and my lymph nodes in my neck on the same side, just looking for advice in recovery.

  • Hi rcoombe

So, around April last year I noticed a swelling starting to appear on the left side of my neck which continued to grow. Initially it was thought to be a Branchial Cleft Cyst, it was biopsied twice and both came back benign.

Roll on a few more months, I was now seeing ENT and they had made the decision a month or two before this appointment to go in and remove the cyst, before hand they looked into my throat, looking back now I assume they were looking for the very thing that they found unfortunatley, any signs of Cancer.

They saw my left Tonsil was enlarged and said that whilst removing the Cyst they were going to take a Biopsy of the Tonsil as well.

When doing the removal it became obvious to the Surgeon that the lumps in my neck weren't cysts but infact Lymph nodes that had filled up, one was about 5cm and the other 7cm (the largest they had every seen!) they were removed with good margins top and bottom, about 2 weeks later I received the diagnosis of the HPV Tonsil Cancer.

My treatment finished in April with 6 weeks of radio and 2 rounds of Cisplatin.

I am now a good 90% back to my normal self, eating well (albeit I don't enjoy eating nearly as much as I used to) my NG tube came out about 3//4 weeks ago.

I have my MRI Wednesday, consultants see nothing of worry or concern on the Endoscope either.

  • Thank you for coming back to me so quickly.

I am happy to hear you are 90% back to yourself.

I have slight enlargement of my tonsil and it has some white spots on it. I am going to the dentist tomorrow and am staying positive it is just tonsil stones or something not so sinister.

I had cervical cancer 5 years ago so hard not to take my mind to the worst when I see something that doesn't look right.

    Good luck with everything.

  • Hiya.

sorry to jump on but wanted to ask how you got on?

I currently have similar symptoms but I'm unable to get to the dentist or doctor as I have covid.

hope it was good news x

  • Hi there.

the dentist and the doctor told me not to be concerned.

I had some extensive dental treatment done recently and the larger white lump on my tonsil went away. There are a couple more very small ones left and my tonsil still doesn't look the same as the other side. I can see what looks like a small inflamed node (red) and my throat doesn't hurt or feel like anything is stuck there but I get some aches down that side of my neck.

I need to get back to the GP I think but as the white lump went away I kind of forgot about it all.

  • Hi there

How are you going with everything?

  • Hi there.

    I'm good thanks.

I've been continuing to get better and better. I've been back at work now for about 5 months, I returned full time in Oct and have been feeling good.

I'm continuing to see the consultant regularly. I had a scan in August which came back with no sign of cancer!

I'm still having intermittent swallowing problems but nothing that eating things with a drink doesn't solve.

I'm now expecting my first child as well

  • Ah that's good news, thank you for your quick reply.

I hope it continues to be good for you! X
