Oncotype score 29

Hi everyone,

Hoping someone can help me here. Diagnosed 4 weeks ago with invasive in lower part of breast and DCIS in upper part. ER pos , PR and Her2 negative , grade 3 , no lymph node involvement seen. I was advised mastectomy followed by radiotherapy , however they sent off for the oncotype test and I ve had results today. Came back as 29 which to me seems a grey area as I m 49 but am going through the menopause as not had a period for 18 months.

The oncologist explained that it gives 18% chance of recurrence just using surgery,  radio and aromatase inhibitor . This lowers to 7- 8% with chemo. However he did say the research was done in the late 80s. I am so unsure what path to take. Is it worth putting my body through chemo for an additional 10% . I have young children so want to give myself the best chance . Would really appreciate some advice from those in the know .

Thanks

  • Hi debbie I had a score of 30 and 19 % recurrence. I went through an agonising time deciding re chemo. Fearful of it. You sound just like how I felt. I was diagnosed Dec 20.. surgery in jan and part way through taxol weekly sessions.

I drafted a long reply and it seems to have deleted. It's late but I will try and catch up tomorrow.

  • Hi Debbie,

I am very similar to you er pos her2neg and grade 3 with no lymph node involvement. I recently had a lumpectomy and thought I was just getting radiotherapy and tamoxifen next. I am 43. Now my onco test result is back with a score of 25 and I am being highly advised to take chemo. I was shown data for recurrences within 9 years for our age group with similar onco results and once I seen the diff between people having chemo and not I changed my mind. Initially I said no as I didn't think the percentage was a big difference but once it was explained I think it makes sense for me personally to try give myself the best chance of it not recurring.

I start on it next week and I just keep telling myself in another 12 weeks I will have the chemo part over with hopefully to never have to go through it again.

Good luck with making your desicion and I know it's not an easy 1 to make.

    Nikki

  • Hi Debbie , I had to make the same decision, mine came back at 23 and was told anything over 25 they would recommend chemo but it was my choice, longest week of my life deciding but after weighing it all up and speaking to numerous medical people I decided it wasn’t for me . I obviously have to live with that choice but I’m 2 years on now and still feel I made the right choice for me. I was 46 at the time. I wish you well with your journey whatever path you choose , nicky x

  • Thanks Nicky. I appreciate your reply . Tough decisions all round. Wishing u all the luck for the future. Take care xx

  • Hi Nikki.  I have similar to you in that grade 3 ER pos HER2 neg.  No lymph node involvement.  I had lumpectomy but did not get clear margins so just had re excision. My Oncotype score is 28.  Can I ask.  Have you also been offered / had radiotherapy to target remaining breast area in addition to chemotherapy.
    thanks
