Mum most likely bowel cancer

My mum has seen a consultant today after experiencing increasing unpleasant symptoms (struggling to eat and pain) and told from CT scan results most likely cancer.  The plan is to remove 1ft of large bowel and 20 lymph nodes.  Without the op her outlook is not good as bowel is very blocked.

My mum is 81 and has a slow heart beat which might make surgery difficult (coming round after surgery) and a few other health issues but is mentally strong.  She was in shock with the news today but is processing all the information.

Just asking if anyone else been through something similar or relatives going through this?  I don't know what to expect for her with possible outcome etc.

  • Hello Clare

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis. It's obviously a difficult time for you both and it's understandable that she is in shock. Hopefully, she won't have to wait long for the surgery and this will set her on a good path for moving forwards.

I know that we do have quite a few members here who have had bowel cancer or who have had a loved one with bowel cancer and hopefully they will post to share their experiences with you.

It can help to talk to someone and so I wanted to let you know about our team of nurses that you're able to call if you'd like to chat things through with them. They're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040 and I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information and support that they can.

    Best wishes,
