Oesophageal cancer, has anyone been on the Scope 2 trial?

Hi,I'm new to the chat so bear with me please. My husband has recently been diagnosed with Oesophageal cancer and has been offered a Scope 2 trial treatment,he's in the middle of going through all the tests to see if he's strong enough to have this,(heart and lung function tests and general fitness)the consultant thinks he'll pass and then he'll start treatment in a couple of weeks. The cancer is stage 3 and spread to lymph nodes but not spread to any other organs.Has anyone had the scope 2 trial or know of anyone who has?The trial consists of more chemotherapy and radiotherapy than the standard dose usually given to patients,Surgery is not an option as it would be dangerous as the tumour is near his heart and lungs. We're worried about this trial as it's very intense but wondering if anyone has had this and could give us their views on it.My husband is 70 and fit for his age,he had tongue cancer 7 years ago and was operated on to remove it and has been ok since and we've been told this oesophageal cancer is not secondary.Sorry for the essay guys.TIA

  • Hello Jue20

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's recent diagnosis. I'm sure it's been a difficult time for you both and it's understandable that you're anxious.

We've quite a few members here on the forum who have, have had or care for a loved one with oesophageal cancer. I can't see that any of them have mentioned being on the Scope 2 trial but I'd suggest posting on this thread to connect with others who have been through this diagnosis. This is the most active thread we have for members impacted by this diagnosis and they're a very welcoming bunch. You might also like to have a look at the story of one of our long-term members [@davek]‍ who was also unable to have surgery. You can read Dave's story here

We do have some information on our website about the Scope 2 trial which may help but you might also want to give our nurses a call to chat things through with them. They're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope this helps and I'm sure that you'll be able to connect with others for support and advice.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn, thank you for replying to my post,I have just read davek's post and it's very reassuring to know how well he's doing,so pleased for him.I've read about the scope2 trial and I know it's a good thing,I'm just anxious and scared for my husband which I know everyone is with cancer or caring for someone with this awful disease.I'm sure we'll get through this awful time and I hope to be writing a positive post in the weeks to come. Thanks again Jenn.

  • Hi Jue20,

Sorry for the slow response, I was on holiday and deliberately off grid last week.

The Scope 2 clinical trial looks really interesting. I wouldn't have qualified for Scope 1 as radio therapy wasn't an option due to my primary's proximity to my aorta. The different chemo element seems to remove the epirubicin part of EOX which can have pretty lousy side-effects. I was lucky and tolerated it quite well but it was still pretty gruelling at the time.

    I hope all goes well.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • Hi Dave, thanks for your reply, hope your well, the scope 2 trial does seem to be a good thing and my husband has just left to go to hospital as it begins today,so fingers crossed. We know it's going to be a long road ahead but it's worth it if it works.Take care.
