Bowel cancer MRI of the liver

Hello,

My mum was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer last week and she was told there was no signs of distant spread. She has now been called in for an MRI of the liver. We asked the nurse why and we were told this is routine? We're a bit worried as we were told it hasn't spread. Has anything else had an MRI scan as part of routine checks?

  • Hello Shaunac 195,

l would say this is good practice since on a four grade classification, stage 3 progression would be to stage 4,whereas stage 1 has a few steps to go ,It does not mean it has however. l was diagnosed stage 3, had pre surgery chemo and radiotherapy, but spread had taken place during this period and was picked up on pre op scans .In laymans terms ,cancer cells are not visible in transit, only upon arrival and setting up residence in a tumour

Thankfully diligent surveillence saved my life when it spread to the liver, and 7 yrs later l am able to respond to your post. l hope your Mum gets to do the same,it sounds like she is under a good medical team who are doing all the right things,

                                                                                                 Take care, David
