Multifocal invasive ductal carcinoma.

I was diagnosed in March with the above cancer sizes 5mm + 6mm 3cms apart, my consultant recommended a wide local excision lumpectomy and a sentinel node biopsy which was carried out on the 13th April, I went for my results today and my DCIS’s were actually 27mm and 32mm the reason they were not seen as being this big was no calcium deposits so the mammograms and ultrasounds didn’t pick them up? My margins are not sufficient on one side of each cancer so my surgeon has recommended another op to clear the margins.  I understand the need to clear the margins but the sentinel node biopsy didn’t work so they removed my lymph nodes the old fashioned way,  but according to pathology no nodes were detected in the sample removed. How does this happen? I’m booked in for another op on the 18th May to hopefully achieve my margins and another sentinel node biopsy, how can they be sure they’ll get them this time? I’m so confused. Has anyone had a similar experience?

  • Hello Victoria13,

I hope that you will hear from someone else here who has had a similar experience. I just wanted to wish you the best of luck for your operation on the 18th of May and I hope that they will be able to clear the margins. Perhaps you would like to give our nurses a call and talk to them about all this? They may be able to explain things to you and answer your questions. You can call them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm (but closed this bank holiday Monday).

Let us know how things go on the 18th May - keeping everything crossed for you!

    Best wishes,
