Newly diagnosed with breast cancer

Hi, I am new to this forum and just wanted to share my experience.....

In October I found a hard lump under where my underwire bra sits on the side.  I thought nothing of it as I have worn underwire bras for years as I have very large heavy breasts.  I assumed it was just tissue being pushed into a lump due to the underwire.  I immeidately stopped wearing underwire bras, got my breasts measured and changed all my bras to soft ones and forgot all about the lump on the side.

On the evening of the 17th March I found a lump in my right breast just above the nipple.  I called the GP next morning spoke to her and saw her within the hour.  The concern she showed when examining the lump in the breast and the one on the side which was still there was palpable and scary.  GP referred me to hospital under a 2 week wait.  Hospital appointment on 6 April where I had mammogram, ultrasound and a biopsy of the breast lump and a fine needle aspiration of the lump on the side.  I then saw a breast doctor who warned me that this could be cancer.  The whole time the sense that things were not good were present but I just had to wait.  I even saw a Macmillan nurse at that appointment.

Got my diagnosis on 21st April - Triple Negative Invasive Ductal Breast Cancer with a breast lump of 2.6cm and a lymph node of 1.5cm also cancerouos - yes that lump under the underwire was a lymph node - I had no idea.   Comprehensive treatment plan in place and things are moving at a pace.  On 23rd April had tumour markers embedded into each tumour and will be having breast MRI tomorrow, CT Scan on 4 May, will see oncologist on 5 May and start chemo shortly after that.

I am scared but realistic and trust that the plan of Chemo, Surgergy and Radiation will get rid of the cancer.

I just wanted to share my experience if it can help anyone else.

  • Hi sorry to hear your news but at least things are moving quickly and you have your plan in place.

I'm also have breast cancer had screening on Feb 27th 2 weeks later recalled further scan, biopsy etc told looks highly likely to be cancer. Results back 31st Match, surgery 21st April now have to wait until 12th May fo results of lymph biopsy to see if radiotherapy or chemo. I feel I'm in a virtual world and it's not real although breast discomfort post op tells me otherwise and having to wear a sports bra 24/7.

Good luck with your treatment keep us updated.

  • Hi,

I am in a similar position to yourself-

Invasive Ductal Breast Cancer with a breast lump of 1.7mm and cancer found in 1 lymph node.

I had my CT scan on Sunday and MRI yesterday. My appointment to see the oncologist is also on 5 May. Plan at the moment is Chemo, followed by lumpectomy and radiation.

Let us know how you get on

    Sal

  • Hi Louise, hope all is well with you and you continue to receive good care and treatment.

Important Update - Following MRI and staging CT scans last week I was summoned to the hospital by the breast cancer consultant.  I was not supposed to see her until August ready for surgery after chemo.  I was actually waiting for an appointment with an oncologist so we could press ahead with our planned treatment.   Consultant had results of my CT scan of chest, abdomen and pelvis which were not quite what we were expecting.   The scan showed lesions on my left breast, chest and abdomen which did not resemble breast cancer.  She ordered another look at the histology and pathology of the biopsies and it turns out that the cancer is actually a melanoma.  I have been referred urgently to a hospital in Manchester (waiting).  Apparently the melanoma can mimic and hide and sometimes mimics breast cancer.  Consultant said all along that the lymph node was not in the right place for breast cancer.  So we have a tumour in the breast and a lymph node and spots/lesions in various other places.  I have never heard of this mimicking but it got me good and proper.  The consultant had a look for a primary skin cancer/melanoma and could not find one.  The Consultant at the hospital in Manchester will go over my skin with a fine tooth comb.  I am intrigued and concerned as we clearly have a metastic issue.    I want to wake up from this nightmare

  • Hi Sal, I am glad you are starting your treatment - good luck.

My situation was turned on its head completely and at the moment I have no treatment plan.

This is like an out of body experience at the moment and I just want a clear defined treatment plan.

  • Hi

I'm sorry to hear your news totally understand you must be climbing the walls with frustration, thank god that consultantwas thorough. Have they given you any indication as to how long you have to wait for appointment.

Here if you need to vent.

    Take care

  • Hi, the breast consultant said that I should hear within 10 days and that if I did not to let her know so hopefully soon.

  • Hi update.  Was called to the hospital on 20 May.  I have stage 4 malignant melanoma and due to the spread of the cancer my options for treatment are limited.

I have been offered immunotherapy and I will be having my first treatment in a week's time.  Busy day at the hospital before that on Tuesday as I need a brain scan to see if the melanoma has made its way up there, followed by more blood tests and a consultation to sign the consent papers and finally (and the worse bit) a covid test.

Sadly I had no warning of this cancer until it was too late and it had spread to several areas and lymph nodes- I did not have a skin lesion and it is believed to have started inside in my GI tract.  I will try immunotherapy and stay as positive as I can.

So from potentially Stage 2 Breast Cancer, I now have Stage 4 Melanoma as the cancer mimicked breast cancer and avoided detection for as long as it could.

Roll on next Friday at least we can try and destroy the cancer by turning my own immune system on it.  It should seek out and destroy the melanoma cells - here's hoping it works for me.

  • Sorry to hear you news.

You sound determined and ready for battle which is good. I start my chemo on 11th and dreading it.

I will keep everything crossed for you and always here if you need to let of steam x
