Diagnosis breast cancer

Hi

Mum was diagnosed with breast cancer 7 weeks ago and had a left breast mastectomy a week ago. She had several biopsies before her surgery and the doctor said it was a large cancer in the top half of her breast and I think DCIS in the lower half. They said it was grade 3 and hormone receptor negative and her lymph node biopsy came back negative but they have done a sentinel node biopsy at the time of surgery to be sure. Mum hasn't had a CT/MRI scan.
We have the follow up call tomorrow with her doctor to find out the results and I am just wondering what results they will give her, other than the lymph node result. Will they know the stage of cancer if she hasn't had an MRI or CT?

thank you very much

  • Hi [@Kmh1605]‍

Sorry to hear about your mum, it is never nice getting the diagnosis for yourself, but when it is a family member you feel so helpless.

When I was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer I didn't have an MRI or CT, you have a mammogram, then you go into another room and have an ultrasound at this point when they find something they do a biopsy and it is the fluid they pull from the lump that they test and this can give you the information about cancer, they will give you lots of numbers and information that helps them decide how it is best treated whether that is surgery, tablets, radiotherapy chemotherapy etc. I was given the results from my about 4 days after the biopsy, they could hazard a guess based on the size of what grade it would be but not what stage, there is a difference between grade of cancer and stage of cancer. They are very supportive and really take the time to explain things to you.

I hope the call goes well for your mum.
