Worried about delayed surgery!

I was diagnosed with a 0.9mm stage lb melanoma on my neck in February.  I had the mole removed on the 8th January.  I saw a a hospital Consultant at the end of February, however, I have been awaiting surgery since then, for a wide local excision and sentinel lymph node biopsy.  I have now been told that he has a backlog of patients and I am on a waiting list and they cannot even tell me what month I will be treated.  I am extremely worried now about the amount of time that has gone by without treatment and I am looking at going private to get it done.  However, not sure how it will effect my ongoing treatment should I need it with the NHS.  I feel like it is all such a fight to get the treatment I need.  The results are needed, so I can start further cancer treatment should I need it, and all this waiting is effecting my outcome.  I am no longer sleeping and getting more and more anxious as the weeks roll by.  I have talked to my MacMillan Nurse based with my dermatologist,  and I am hoping she can help me get a referral to another consultant! Apparently head and neck surgeons are hard to find in my area.    Any body else seeing delayed treatment at the moment?

  • Hello Kazcardie

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis and that the further surgery that you need is currently delayed. It's obviously an anxious time for you and understandable that you're concerned about how the delay may impact any other treatment that you may possibly need.

It's good to hear that you've spoken with the MacMillan nurse and I do hope that she is able to help move things along a little more quickly. In the meantime, you may want to have a chat with one of our team of nurses for some advice and support. If you'd like to speak with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Alternatively, if you're still feeling unhappy with the length of wait then you could speak with the hospital PALS department to see if they are able to help.

I hope that you have some news soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Jen, Thank you for your reply. My MacMillan nurse has been very helpful, however, she has been unable to move anything forward. I did write an email to PALS and my consultant's secretary phoned me back, but could not tell me when I can expect to receive treatment. I am on a waiting list and clearly not a priority. I spoke to Admissions too and they don't have a slot for me yet. My particular hospital have a particular problem with backlog surgeries, and with my melanoma being in my neck, it would seem there is only one surgeon who can perform the sentinel lymph node biopsy and wide local excision surgery that I need!! I have no idea how long I will have to wait. The anxiety is unbearable. I have asked if I can go on a cancellations list and I think that is all I can do. I even contacted his private secretary to see if going private would be quicker, but he has a backlog there too! My nurse is trying to see if another Hospital out of the area, could do it any quicker, so I am hoping that something comes of that! Thank you for your help x
