Rectal cancer

My dad told me on friday he has been diagnosed with rectal cancer. He is 52 .

The tumor is lower down and is 5cm diameter and has grown inwards towards the middle of this rectal tube.

He has had a biopsy and colonoscopy done tuesday then he got the result of cancer and had his cat scan friday and mri sunday - they seem to be moving fast which is amazing but also worrying paired with the fact the consultant said he thinks dad has had this for a while , and dad has had bleeding 3 months .

His team meet on on Wednesdays so we have 2 days until then , and god knows how long until we get the full details .

I am hoping we get grading results the end of this week but im really overthinking it and researching all i can .

I think i am still in shock and we just want to know the results NOW .
I know its not possible and they are moving as fast as they can and its in no way a critism to the wonderful people working to get him the results he needs , but this time is so worrying .

All i keep thinking is once we know the stage of his cancer that will make it better as we will have answers but also terrified those answers will be the worst possible ones.

Has anyone had a similar story and had a positive outcome ?

  • Hi Dusky19,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear that your dad and all of you are going through this at the moment, I can imagine the not knowing must be really difficult.

It's good to hear they are moving quickly but I can appreciate this comes with some worry too. As you say they meet on Wednesdays, hopefully it won't be long until you find out more.

Research can be helpful up to a point, but as it's not specific to any individual it can also cause more worry or unanswered questions, so try to make sure it's not making you feel worse.

As you say, once you hear more hopefully there will be some next steps and less of the unknown.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hi, my dad is 69. He was diagnosed with rectum cancer just before Christmas. His tumor was a t4 but he has recently had a pelvic exenteration operation and is now back home slowly recovering. There is lots they can do so stay positive :)
