Stage 4 cancer

Hi, I wanted to know the survival rate for mum. Cancer has spread to lungs, ovaries, bones, liver, bowel.. realistically will they offer treatment. Chemo looks deadly so shes scared to have it  that's if they offer it.

Regards

  • Hello Sam46

I'm so sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis. It's difficult for us to say if there what options may be available for your Mum but certainly the team responsible for her care will be looking to make sure she is as comfortable as possible and it may be that she's referred to a palliative care team to help with this.

It may help to have a chat with one of our team of nurses. If you'd like to speak to them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040. I'm sure they will be able to offer some information and support.

    Best wishes,

  • Hey Sam,

I'm so sorry to hear about your mum. What is her primary cancer?

My mum was diagnosed with Stage 4 Bowel cancer, spread to liver, lungs and pelvic. She was declined surgery, as the cancer had spread too much.
She was offered palliative care- to help with her symptoms and relieve pain.
We are due to see an oncologist to discuss palliative chemotherapy, but have been told, this will only be offered if she is fit enough. ( Which currently she isn't, as she is bed bound)

From speaking to the consultants, I would say my mum's options were limited, due to her being extremely weak- she's been bed bound since January. She also has ascites.

So I would say, the treatment will be based on how fit she is, and where the cancer has spread, her age etc. But in terms of treatment, if you're not happy with the treatment plan, you can always seek a second opinion.

In terms of survival rate, I've found many people on here who have Stage 4 cancer, and have been here for years- this gives me hope, and it should give you hope too. Please stay positive. Tomorrow is not guranteed for anyone- regardless if you have cancer or not.

    Hope this provides some help!

Sending you lots of love and prayers x
