Tonsil Cancer

Hi, my husband was recently diagnosed with tonsil cancer that has spread to his lymph nodes, his treatment plan is 2 cycles of chemo each consisting of 1 week chemo and 2 weeks off followed by 6 weeks radiotherapy with 2 further days of chemo in between.
He has started the chemo and is halfway thru the second week but the biggest problem for him at the moment is that his sense of taste has completely changed and everything tastes disgusting, even water.  This is naturally causing him to not want to eat and even though he is forcing himself he's not eating anything like what he's used to and I'm really worried he's going to lose so much weight it will affect his treatment.  Has anyone had this or got any tips to help him eat?We are running out of things to try

Thank you.

    Hi Judy

Sorry to hear of diagnosis and I know from experience that eating/drinking can be a challenge.

I used to treat and think of food as medication and something I had to take as I knew my body needed fuel, especially during and after treatment. That helped slightly as mentally/physically I didnt want to eat.
At this stage, I was encouraged to try and increase calories and with rice puddings, creamed mash, full fat yoghurts etc.
I would recommend having a chat with support team as they can prescribe supplementary drinks like "Ensure" ( tip put in fridge and drink cold)

Weight loss is pretty much normal and your husband will have his weight monitored throughout treatment by his support team which should also include a dietician and they can be super helpful.

My mantra as well was to drink as much water as possible, even little sips often. This will keep hubby hydrated as well as usiing throat muscles.
I have posted a link to my blog that I kept from the get go and hopefully that may help put some things into perspective and there are plenty of tips I picked up along the way.
May not seem so at the time but the success rate for this type of cancer is really high and there is light at the end of the tunnel as i often quote.
Hope helps but let me know if I can help in anyway

    kind regards

  • Thank you, he is drinking plenty of water (at my insistence!) but food is a real issue atm the only thing that tastes ok is ice cream.  He will be have the peg feed fitted in about 3 weeks so at least if nothings improved we will be able to get nourishment in him.  I will take a look at your blog, thanks for your advice.
