My father's recent lung cancer diagnosis

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure where to really begin. It started a couple of months ago, my dad (60 years old) got a terrible chesty cough which started producing specks of blood in his phglem. He went to the doctors who then arranged for a CT Scan where a shadow was found on the top right upper lobe of his lung. The doctor arranged for a PET-Scan and EBUS Biopsy.

We received the news today he has lung cancer and the shadow was a tumour. This has taken all of us by surprise. My dad is an incredibly active and fit person - cancer has never been anything that has ran through our immediate/extended family.

We've got an appointment with the oncologist who will go into more detail about the staging but the doctor said the good news is, the cancer is just in the lungs and has not spread. The lymphnodes are swollen which I think means that it has spread to there but it still seems very early on.

The plan is to go for chemo and radiotherapy together at once. The doctor says he does not wish to surgically remove it at this stage as there's no guarantee it will not come back. I guess it would make more sense to kill the cells and reduce the size of the tumor and maybe follow up with surgery with more chemo?

My eyes and head are sore from googling all kinds of things on google. But my main takeaway from this is, if you remain positive, positive will happen. So we're all trying to remain as positive and not bring change to our daily life/routine. Instead this will be part of our lives and we will just adopt around it.

I can't tell you how incredibly heart breaking it is to hear this, it's been a complete shock to all of us, especially my mum.

I'm here to get stories from everyone and their experiences. I want to hear all about how you all dealt with this and what we need to do to prepare for chemo/radiotherapy.

Thank you :)

  • Hello AP0403

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's recent diagnosis. It's understandably been a difficult time for you all and I'm glad to hear that there has been some positivity in all the news that you've received. I certainly think we'll have members here who agree that keeping a positive focus helps to get through the treatment process.

I'm unsure if we've any members who have had chemoradiation for lung cancer. Hopefully if we have they will post to share their experiences with you. We've some information here on our website which you may find helpful.

You might find it useful to get in touch with our team of nurses for some advice and information. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040 and I know they'll be happy to talk things through with you and offer any support that they can ahead of your appointment with the Oncologist.

I hope this helps a little. Do keep in touch and let us know how your Dad gets on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn,

I thought I'd update this post as we saw the oncologist yesterday.

She confirmed it's stage 3 and also confirmed that their intention is to cure my dads cancer. This is excellent news and we are going to stay strong during dads treatment.

He will be on chemo and radio for 1 month and will have a scan 13 weeks later. Hoping he will start end of this month.

    Will keep everyone posted.

  • Hi APO403

Further to your post re your dad and his cancer battle, was wondering how he was doing after his chemo and radiation treatment. Hope all went well for him.

My hubby is in a similar position with stage 3 lung cancer and facing chemo radiation and wondered if you can give any words of wisdom.

    Thanks
