basal cell carcinoma

Hi my mother has had a mark on her arm about the size of a penny. around 2cms. which we noticed around last november.  Its very painful to touch. she describes it like 1000 needle ***. the pain also stretches further up the arm about an inch or 2 around the mark.  i finally got her to go to the docs end of january. they sent a picture to dermatology who has said its a basal cell carcinoma. my mother had a letter 3 weeks ago saying she has now been referred to be seen but that it could be a 6 month wait and it could end up being a video call. Is this right?

  • Hi,

Sadly it sounds about right. Non melanoma skin cancer always takes longer to be dealt with by dermatology as it is non invasive and doesn't spread (other than on the skin). Pre Covid a bcc patient would be seen within 2 months but the wait is now much longer because some of the clinic staff are working to cover other areas like the Covid wards etc so it's a skeleton staff.

If the lesion is causing more pain I would get your mum to contact her GP and ask if there is a topical cream she can be presecribed to help while she is waiting. Usually, basal cell that's caught early can be treated by a particular cream that clears it up without surgery. In your mum's case, it may help stop the irritation/pain until she can be seen by dermatology.

Good luck & I hope she isn't waiting too much longer,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
