Just looking for guidance: mum diagnosed with breast cancer

Hi All,

Very new to the cancer world - my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer on Weds. She found a lump last Friday and was seen so quickly that by Weds they had confirmed after a biopsy she had cancer.

She has a meeting with a cancer team next week, I am just wondering if anyone can share their experiences on the next steps here.

Feeling a little shaken and terribly heartbroken over here

  • Hello Charlie212,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I am so sorry to hear that your mum was diagnosed with breast cancer on Wednesday. It's incredible though how quickly she was seen and had her diagnosis confirmed. Hopefully that means that things are moving fast and that she can have her treatment very soon.

I hope you won't mind I have slightly edited the title of your post to add the information that your mum has been diagnosed with breast cancer. This will increase the chances of anyone who has been through these different steps before seeing your post and responding. If you go on our forum search which is located on the blue banner at the top and type in the keywords "breast cancer", you will be able to see past relevant threads from other members who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and don't hesitate to respond to any you would like to engage with.

Our cancer nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm so don't hesitate to give them a call if you would like to talk things through with them.

I hope the meeting with your mum's cancer team goes well. We also have information on our website on breast cancer here which may be helpful to you.

I will now let our many members here who have been affected by breast cancer come and say hello and share their story with you and tell you more about what the next steps might be. It does help to talk to others who understand what you are going through.

    Best wishes,

  • Morning [@Charlie212]‍

Hopefully your Mum has had her meeting with the Breast care team now as your post was a week ago.

How is she, how are you?

Are you able to go with her? I know with current restrictions they try not to let people in that don't need to be.

I had to go in on my own when I was diagnosed.

It all does sound scary and until it is known what grade and what stage it is difficult to know what the next steps will be and that makes you worry more as by nature you fear the worse.

But from experiencing it, they are so helpful so kind and there is never a feeling of them rushing you out the door. (of course that is going to depend where you are and I am only saying my experience)

You have an all female team - apart from the oncolgist he was a male doctor - they do move quickly - I think I had my surgery three weeks after diagnosis, well just under three weeks.

They discuss what they have found, what treatments are going to be and walk you through every step. When my Nan was diagnosed with Lung Cancer I was shaken and heartbroken too and when you are the one going through it the feelings all just change and you forget about what others around you are feeling as you are concentrating on keeping your own mind focused.

I really do hope you have had some answers from the hospital now and have been able to process things a lot better.
