Double Mastectomy

Hi all,

I'm really just after what peoples experiences are and if anyone has been in a similar situation.

I'm 36 and was diagnosed on the 2nd feb with breast cancer, a grade 1 oestrogen positive tumour. I've had an MRI and go back on Feb 16th to find out what the next steps are. When I was there on the 2nd, I was told at that point they weren't sure if I'd need a lumpectomy or mastectomy and chemotherapy is still questionable but I've been referred for fertility treatment just in case. My mum died of metastatic breast cancer 11 years ago, my sister is BRCA2 positive and I tested negative. My surgeon is contacting the hospital where I had the test to see if they think I need retesting (probably not, just one of those cruel twists of fate), but she did say that considering my family history, if I wanted a mastectomy (even if a lumpectomy was considered appropriate) I could have one. I've given it some thought, and this would be my preference, but to be honest, I'd rather just get rid of both of them with a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction.

has anyone been in this position where they have managed to have a double mastectomy despite having cancer in one breast?

Any experiences are appreciated. Much love.
Em

  • Hi,

I was diagnosed in 2019 at 31 and I had a bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction, depsite only having cancer in one.

I believe it is down to the discretion of the surgeon and whether or not they  support you. I was lucky in that mine fully supported my decision.

As part of the process i also had to have a psychological assesment to ensure i would manage/cope with the changes to myself after surgery.

Happy to chat if you have any questions.
