Melanoma with regression

Hello, I've recently been diagnosed with melanoma in situ with regression on my lower leg. My consultant has told me that regression used to be seen as a bad sign, but is now considered good as the body's immune system has responded to the cancer. Does anyone have any experience of such a diagnosis? I've been told I'll definitely be having a WLE but no mention of SNLB so far. Any advice gratefully received.

  • Hi,

I haven't personal experience of regression but I do know a few who have such a diagnosis and I have heard that the clinicians think the immune system has worked overtime to fight the cancerous cells. An in-situ melanoma is the 'best' of a bad bunch as it has stayed within the top layer of skin. This means it can't spread to other parts of the body and therefore a SLNB won't be offered (it's only offered for melanoma more than 0.8mm in depth). I hope this helps,

    Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient)
