Due to have AC Chemotherapy next week, what can I expect?

i was diagnosed with stage 2/3 breast cancer on 22nd Dec 2020. I am having neo adjunct therapy and am due to have my first dose of AC chemotherapy on 29th January and was wondering what to expect. How long does the actual chemo take? I realise everybody reacts differently but did anyone have side effects from it and what were they and how did you cope with it if you don’t mind sharing?

  • Hi Lillywhite

How are you? It's a bit of a shocker isn't it when you get chucked into this world Of cancer.

I had EC as my second regime of chemo. Having it administered doesn't take long at all really. Mines was Epirubicin which was in two syringes which took about 10 minutes each to go through and then Cyclophosphamide which took around 30 minutes. I think all together I would be on the unit for about 2 hours as you have pre- meds before it which they let kick in and then you have flushes  before and between each drug which are about 10-20 minutes if I remember right.

I have to say the EC for me did knock me sick a little bit. Not massively but I had a few days where I would just feel really nauseous. Not great but totally manageable and nothing compared to what I was expecting. You usually have an injection called Filgrastim with the EC too which has a few side effects but then like with the actual chemo everyone reacts totally different. I would speak to people who had no side effects at all from the EC but didn't feel great on the other regime I had that I was fine with.

one thing I will say is drink plenty of water every day and ask for some laxatives the first sign of any problems in that area as constipation was one of the worse things for me but if you keep one step ahead of it you'll be ok :)

Hope this helps, if you wanna ask anything else I'm here

  • Hi

thank you for your reply a bit of a shocker is an understatement! To make it worse as a nurse I’ve been signed off from work for the last 4 weeks to minimise the risk of catching Covid so I’m at home all day just thinking which isn’t good. Your reply has helped so thank you for taking the time. Hope you are doing ok?
