Bowel cancer that’s spread to liver

Hi,

My ex husband has been diagnosed with bowel cancer that's spread to the liver. He's had the op to remover the part of the bowel with cancer in but they haven't operated on his liver. Chemotherapy is next but does that mean they will operate on the liver later? Or will the chemotherapy get rid of that? I don't feel I'm getting all the info from his family and I need to be prepared to help my kids deal with the outcome. His family are all positive but everything I read about secondary cancer isn't good. Any info would be great. Thanks

  • Hello Brownbag,

l had bowel cancer with spread to the liver.Any course of action will depend on location, type and aggressiveness of the cancer involved, and it would appear that there was urgent surgery required on the Bowel. There would be no prospect of doing the liver at the same time,so chemo will be to hold/reduce spread until further surgery on the liver,or if surgery not possible due to location,to try and control the existing spread.

l had chemo/radiotherapy pre surgery for bowel resection, but this was changed as it was realised that l subsequently had aggressive spread to liver during that time,so liver first, ten weeks to recover, then bowel; surgery, then 18 weeks of mop up chemo.Seven years later l am here to write this and am leading a very full life.So although your ex faces a hard journey,it is by no means an impossible one, every persons diagnosis will be unique to them. so l hope he can make it through to a full recovery,

                                             David

  • Hi all I have bowel cancer that gone to the liver am about to start chemo this week had a stoma bag fitted last month just after I found out I had cancer so been crazy month but David ur story gives me a lot ov hope I will get though this.  brownbag I hope u can take as much positive vibes from David’s story and ur ex will come though just like me

  • Your post is positive to read that stage 4 is not the end of the road. Good to hear.

  • Your cancer is very much like mine, but I don't yet have the stoma! My chemo is due to start next week, I am having the port fitted on Friday and meeting the nursing team tomorrow for a prep briefing. Terrified of the chemo given all the side effects described, but feeling positive they have decided to treat me and not offer palliative care!

  • Hi yes am due to have a pickline done tomorrow then start chemo on Thursday hopefully you won’t have to have the stoma like me then I wish I would ov just gone for the chemo with out getting it but I understand why got done like am also worried about side effects ov chemo are u getting the back pack one that u have for 46hours then nurse takes off u at home like me also am not worried about my hair lol went grey at 16 so am thinking if grows back I’ll dry black and say it’s a upside ov chemo lol but the main one for me is the cold  sensitivity  One can’t have cold drink till over going to be bit ov a killer 4 me that

  • Hiya,  the port they are fitting will mean that the chemo is administered over 48 hours, they start me off at the unit then after a couple of hour go home with the pump. I am not sure who disconnects it after 48 hours?  I too am not worried about loosing my hair,  I have some pretty scarves. Since my diagnosis my hair has gone from blonde and straight to darker and curly,!
ive not heard of cold sensitivity? But have read drinking through a straw helps keep you hydrated.
Im meeting the team at the unit today so hopefully will be more informed about what to expect.  We can track our progress and compare notes on side effects and problem solve overcoming some of them, given our journey will almost ne the same.

  • Hi yes that what chemo am having but defo do keep in touch be good talking with someone going though same as me am sure the ur nurse will go though anything with u today  I had mine last week not much to worry about but if u got questions write down and take with u so don’t 4get I always go blank when going though it then come out with loads of questions but hopefully we get though this at same time all best for today
