Recently diagnosed with BC

Hi everyone,

Been diagnose with grade 1 BC. It’s worrying and had sleepless nights after being diagnosed in November after second mammogram that I got .7mm grade 1 BC. No matter how old you are it really affect to individual. We are bombarded with lots of question= how to deal with it? What is my kid’s  future when I’m gone?  How long I gonna live? Can I survive the treatment when I have underlying health issues? etc, etc.  I am 60 and recently been diagnosed with osteoarthritis and constant high blood pressure.

Done the lumpectomy on 16 December 2020 and waiting for the schedule for radiotherapy. I was told with my breast doctor that after the breast operation we will wait for the biopsy. If anything left after the operation I will undergo a second breast operation. Then followed by radiotherapy for a week and medication up to 5 years.

For now, I never tell any of our friends what’s going on. I want to keep it secret for now that I am undergoing treatment. Because to me telling them doesn’t help. I don’t want them talking about me dying.

I only have the guts to join the chat and tell you about my health condition and hopefully we can share how we deal with our illnesses. I am a Christian and I believe God will never abandon us in times we needed Him most.

Best wishes.

  • Hello Jeet123

It is always a great pleasure to get a reply and update our health condition here. Sharing is helping one another.

Glad to hear you had  your radiotherapy 3x and that you are enjoying the company with your 2 year grand son. That will help your speedy recovery. I have grand children but they live far away.

Please keep me updated with your radiotherapy how it goes. Can't wait to see my surgeon next week and see what is the next plan for my treatment after lumpectomy 3 weeks ago.

    Take care and best wishes!
    Thinking of you,

    Hi Lagerlime,

It sounds as if we have a very similar medical history. I had a full open cholecystectomy (when I was relieved of a 3” gallstone), osteoarthritis, am attending a cardiologist with severe high blood pressure and am Diabetic. I was 60 when I was first diagnosed with grade 1 Pure Mucinous Breast Cancer. I was told that this was a rare type and that I was fortunate in that it was one of the less aggressive types. I had a lumpectomy and started taking Tamoxifen. Within six months I developed a larger lump in my other breast – fortunately this turned out to be benign. However, a further 6 months down the line I found a lump in my original breast and this time I wasn’t so lucky.

I had a double mastectomy, followed by Letrozole for 6 years. I did have some side-effects with both Tamoxifen and Letrozole, especially with my joints on Letrozole. It is hard to say how much of this would have happened without the Letrozole, as I had mild Arthritis from the outset. I ended up having to have both of my knees replaced after 3 years. I also have lumbar stenosis of my spine, neuritis in my legs and pain in most of the joints in my body. Two years after that I had to have both cataracts removed. Unfortunately, this led to further eye complications, where I lost the sight in one eye for a year and was fast losing it in the other. Fortunately 7 operations down the line, laser surgery has restored my eyesight to 20/20 vision.

This all sounds awful I know, but it was all ‘doable’ and I would do it all again in a heartbeat if I knew that it was going to give me all this time. My pre-existing medical conditions didn’t cause any additional complications with treatment and I have seen both of my children graduate from university, marry and produce grandchildren in that time. I also still lead a busy and fulfilled life.

You are so right in what you say. Hold on to that positivity, as this is what will get you through. Do please let us know when your results come through. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

    Hi Litchielou,

I hope that all went well with your results yesterday and that you now have a plan for the way forward. Weren't you fortunate that this was picked up on a routine mammogram?

    Thinking of you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Jeet,

I am so glad to hear that you are coming to the end of your radiotherapy and hope that it all goes well. Isn't it amazing how we can lose ourselves with grandchildren and forget all of our worries for a while?

I hope that all continues to go well for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you Jolamine

Yes I can't believe how lucky I have been.

You have been through the ringer with your health. I'm pleased that you are having a fulfilling life.

And you are now seeing again, that must be scary losing sight in one eye.

Having your family is second to none. We must grasp every second of this time on earth.

    Take care

    Litchielou x

    Hello my dear Jolamine,

What a long informative and inspiring message you posted in here! Thank you so much for sharing your experience!!

Indeed! We have similar health issues = BC, high blood pressure and osteoarthritis. I am just started to my long journey and still waiting for the biopsy result after lumpectomy but you are going through so well  and there you are seeing your children growing with their families . What a brave lady you are! I admire you, you are such a good example that everyone here must have the courage like you to go through whatever illnesses we are facing right now.

I am not working at the moment. I left my job last August due to my health condition. My job requires standing most of the 9 hours I was at work and I’m working 4 days a week, at night when I get home I  got excruciating pain in my lumbar spine and eventually I decided to leave and passed a month noticed to the manager.

I did not realise after my routine  mammogram every 3 years they found lump in my right breast. I thought is was benign. When my breast doctor told me that it was BC and I will undergo lumpectomy, radiotherapy and medication for some time, I did not sleep that night. It’s an awful feeling and that reminds me of my first husband died of brain cancer 30 years ago. I said to myself “now it’s my turn having a cancer”.

Although my breast doctor assured me that grade 1 BC is treatable but what worry me too much is.. what  if I cannot survive the radiotherapy when before and after the surgery last month and until now my shoulder bones was so painful down to my elbows and fingers. When I read the brochure given to me from the breast clinic that radiotherapy has side effect, that the collar bones might be affected and become brittle or break. I’m taking pain killers again. There are times I cannot sleep due to throbbing pain of my bones. Very frustrating!!

Well, that’s what I said previously... no need to worry too much about our illnesses as worrying does not help to ease the pain.

Thank you once again for sharing your experience. Oh yes! Next week after seeing my surgeon I will post what’s going on. Keep finger cross no more operation and I will start the treatment soon.

Big hugs and take care xx
