Bowel cancer advice

Hi all. My dad was told he had bowel cancer and the consultant believed he would be able to remove it. He had his operation on 30th December but once inside they stated that the mass was bigger than expected and that the bowel lining is touching the kidney lining so they did not want to risk the procedure. They are still saying that it is contained within the bowel.

They now want to do chemo for 5-6months to shrink it and then re-operate. He has had a stoma fitted for now to avoid the emergency situation of a near blockage.

Has anyone else been through this?

Thanks x

  • hello G247,

it sounds like your fathers medical team are well on top of his treatment plan, snd hopefully the chemo will do a job in shrinking the tumour.

l had six weeks of chemo and radiotherapy to contain and stop the spread of a bowel tumour before a planned operation at four months with a stoma fitted. Pre op scans identified spread had taken place to the liver,so original plans shelved and surgery to remove 60% of my liver along with gallbladder took place within a few weeks, followed by bowel op and stoma 8 weeks later ,with 18 weeks of post op chemo.

No denying it was really hard going but l am 6 years out on the other side and you would be hard pushed to spot l had been through this, even though l carry some permanant damage which l just get on and live with.l was 62 when diagnosed, and a farmer.l kept and looked after my stock throughout and still do today, and this is what kept me going,so Belted Galloway cattle and Texel sheep are great therapy.During that time l built a new retirement home on our croft and sold the big old farmhouse that we ran as a guesthouse, and am curreently erecting a new barn to house my tractor and equipment.,

l hope this gives you an idea of the possibilities, they are not all negative, and if you are prepared to drive yourself the outcomes can be good.. l hope the following months progress well for your father, and he gets a successful op,

                                                             David
