Triple negative breast cancer

My Mum just had her results today.  She has 3 tumours 14mm, 8mm and 4mm.   They've said it's triple negative stage 2 and that it's good news it's been caught early.  She's starting 6 months of chemo in the next 10 days then a mastectomy

I googled and of course terrified myself.    I'm scared about the treatment and how best to care for her?  She lives with me but I'm a single Mummy to a toddler so I'm already worried I'm not going to be able to give each of them my full attention.

I'm rambling as it's just hitting and it just feels a nightmare

  • Hello scareduk,

I am sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis but it is reassuring that they have said it is good news and that it's been caught early. I can understand why you are feeling worried about this intensive treatment she is about to have  but it sounds like there is a clear treatment plan for her and that she is in very capable hands.

One important rule - and one no one ever follows as we are all guilty of doing this - try not to google anything as this will only bring up the worst case scenarios and make you worry more. Stick to reliable scientific websites - for example Cancer Research UK's page on Triple Negative Breast Cancer can be found here and I hope it is useful to you. Should you have any specific questions, you can also get in touch with our team of nurses on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

You must be incredibly busy being a single mummy to a toddler and I am sure your mum will completely understand that your attention will be divided between her and the little one. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself. You can only do what you can and be there for both of them, but also try and save a little bit of time for yourself to recharge your batteries from time to time. Our information for family, friends and caregivers on this page contains useful tips to help you support someone with cancer but also to help you take care of yourself which I think is really important in your situation.

You have come to the right place to meet others who have had a similar diagnosis. If you type in the keywords "triple negative breast cancer" in our forum search function which is located on the blue banner at the top, you will be able to find other relevant threads on the subject and feel free to respond to any you wish to engage with. I had a little look for you and found for example this interesting recent thread by [@fifa]‍ and you will see there other wonderful ladies like [@FiFi2020]‍ who have also been diagnosed with this cancer. Hopefully you will be chatting with them soon and I hope it helps you feel a little less alone with all this.

Best wishes to you and your mum,
