Thyroid Cancer

Hi All

I am a 40 year old male who recently had an operation for papillary thyroid cancer that had spread to my lymph nodes in my chest so i needed a sternotomy also. The operation was a success and i am recovering well physically but i am just so depressed and anxious in the last few days.

WHen i arrived home first i was doing well but not as i improvie physically i find my mental state very poor. I am on anti depressants for a few years anyway so this is my character but its so difficult to just see the wood from the trees and be glad that i had successfull treatment and my prognosis is very good.

Im not sleeping well and not eating great either, i had a 9 hour operation so maybe im still affected by that but i want to get some sleeping aids from the doctor to help but of course im afraid of taking those

Can anyone help me

  • Hi there,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to read what you've been through and how you're feeling, although it was great to hear that the treatment was a success.

You have been through a lot by the sounds of things, so is it natural for you to be experiencing different - and possibly conflicting - emotions about it all. I'm sure that things will gradually begin to settle more in time. It is fairly cliched but try to take things a day at a time, practise self-care and focus on the positives such as the results. Little things such as fresh air, doing things you enjoy like watching shows or reading, or meditation can all offer extra help.

Of course do see your doctor if you would like some additional support with this too.

Hopefully you'll receive further replies to your post, or if not then do browse or search (using the button in the blue bar above) the forum for other relevant discussions.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
