Lung cancer

Hi everyone, so my dear mum (76) was told yesterday that she has cancer

Its all happened relatively quickly and I can't quite remember why it all started. She lives with me, my husband and 2 daughters (12 and 6).

She had a stomach X-ray and was informed there's nothing sinister but something was enlarged (she can't remember what), she had a blood test which showed she was anaemic (prescribed iron tablets), GP rang and asked questions about if she'd had a cough, coughed any blood etc. She replied no (I've not heard any cough tbh) but decided to send her for a chest x ray. He rang her a few hours later to say they'd found a 3cm lump in her lung and was being referred for a CT of thorax, abdomen and pelvis. That when we got the results yesterday (week after CT). The doctor said it's a 3.5cm x2.5 cm lump in her right lung and by looking at the CT he couldn't see it had spread but she's booked for a PET scan next week. Then the following week the MDT will meet and discuss the results and will hopefully be able to book a biopsy. My question is, even though they can't see it's spread on the CT what's the likely hood that the PET scan will pick something up. Has anyone had any experience where CT said no to spread but PET scan showed it had spread.
My mum is taking it in her stride, and I keep asking if she's being honest with her symptoms and she said yes, no cough, no blood from chest, no blood in stools.
thanks for reading.

  • Hello, my husband has stage four lung cancer and his tumour was large, he had a cough but no other symptoms.  So we are three years on, chemo, radiotherapy and now immunotherapy.  The whole process is as you describe and yes the Pet scan shows up anything more which is why they do it but it doesn't mean it's spread.  My husband is now 75 years old and coping well, still a large tumour but no cough, no blood, so believe Mum as she is coping and being truthful.  If she doesn't mind you can ask her to give permission for you to ask questions, the McMillan nurses will always help you.  Our grown daughters live hundreds of miles away so we agreed to include them being told what is happening.  I think us oldies have a more laid back approach to this and we hate seeing our children being scared for us, so if she's happy taking it in her stride then just be there to help.  My husband hates being a "cancer patient ' he just wants to be Dad and live as normally as he can.  Good luck, keep us updated, Carol

  • Thanks carol for your response. You give me hope in your reply. Yes, I will ask if she will give permission for me

to ask questions, I'm sure she will. Yes, I'm taking her lead in how she wants to be etc. Your husband sounds like a tough cookie. Thanks again, Melissa xxx

  • You're welcome Melissa, I post most days on my Dor06 page, you can private message me if you need help.  Yes he is a tough cookie but he wanted to live for his family.  Carol x

  • Hi, at my ct scan after final treatment for endometrial cancer they picked up 2 x 3.5cm shadows on either side of my spine at chest level.  Because of my endometrial they have to check oncologist says, he said vague shadows I’m thinking 3.5cm sounds more like a mass then a shadow, so after the last couple months I’m truelly worried.i just got the feeling there was something he wasn’t  telling me, maybe just my worry but does this sound like ur mum, I have no symptoms of anything, but got to hv pet scan then biopsy is needed that sounds more then a shadow

  • MY lung cancer is stage 3. I had no sypmptoms until i coughed up a little blood one day. That and tiredness. Ive just finished chemo and radiotherapy. My cancer isnt active and i hope to return to my work soon.

When i had my CT scan for lung cancer; i to was told they couldnt tell if it had spread.i was stage 3 , possible stage 4, dependiong on what the tiny  marker on my chest wall was. The PET scan showed it hadnt spread. Apart from a tiny marker on my chest wall.  Eventualy after several atempts at having a biopsy, they found the marker was nothing sinister. My treatment was delayed til they were sure.

  • I was told couldn’t hv pet scan for 12 weeks as had internal radiotherapy last month then 1 hour later they rang and said booked for tomorrow, fast turnaround now I worried they changed Cos know something. Why is everything so blinking scarey

  • Its good they have it booked for tomorow. You wont have to wait so long for the results. I think id be like you; wondering why it was brought forward . Im paranoid about every hospital apointment and scan.

  • Receptionist said can give false result as I’ve just finished internal radiation, then suddenly was can u make tomorrow. Really a scarey process I just gotta hope for the best. I have no symptoms other then upper back aches by spine but didn’t have this before so maybe it’s just all in my head

  • Hi it’s me again, so pet done Wednesday evening, had a call his afternoon saying oncologist wants to see me on Tuesday, now I’m worried

  • Try to put it out of your mind . There could a simple explaination for it. A cancelation maybe.I remember i had an apointment brought forward. was terrified. When i saw consultant he thanked me for seeing him at short notice,,,, he was going away for a few days.  It doesnt mean its bad news. Ive got apointment Monday to see my consultant.
