Cancer is back

I had malignant melanoma on my scalp in 2018 and at the end of August I had a lymph node swell up by my ear. They took it out on 3 Nov and they found melanoma. It's just over 2.5yrs since my original diagnosis so prime time for metastasis.

My issue now is that I don't know what to do. This surgery (periauricular LN removal) only found a sample 1mm wide so it didn't get picked up on either contrast MRI or PET scans because it's too small. I can't help thinking that it could be in any number of other regional LN or further afield without being detected too!

I know that the 3 options will be 1. Wait and keep scanning, 2. Immunotherapy, 3. Neck dissection surgery. They are discussing my case at their MDT meeting on Thursday and will call me further but my mental health suffers anyway and this fairly minor surgery has already stopped me doing things further than I thought and I just don't know if I'm strong enough to go through more invasive surgery or side effects of immunotherapy. On the other hand, even just waiting these 3 days has been torture so the thought of waiting overthinking that cancer is just growing without anyone doing anything is even worse :(

I'm not expecting anyone to know the answer but I just needed to chat and "get it out". I do have a good support network of friends but my anxiety tells me that they're not going to want ti hear me "keep going on about it" when there is little they can do to help/advise.

Anyway, thanks for reading.

  • Hello, uksmurf.

I'm sorry to hear that cancer is back and that you're understandably worried about it.

We do have members who will be able to relate to your experience, and I hope they will come along shortly with words of support and advice as chatting with those who understand does seem to help.

The other thing I wanted to add is that if you ever feel like speaking to someone medically trained on the phone might help, our team of nurses are a phone call away on this number: 0808 800 4040 and their line is open Monday - Friday, between 9 a.m - 5 p.m.

    Best wishes,
