Tumour wrapped around carotid artery

Hi,

My dad is 58 and has gotten through stage 3 squamous cell carcinoma in the tongue and lymph node two years ago. Unfortunately today we found out that the cancer had returned in a lymph node and has wrapped 270 degrees around the carotid artery. The consultant plans on opening my dad up to see if he can operate to remove it. Has anyone been though anything similar?

Thanks,

Roisin.

  • Hello Roisin12

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's diagnosis. I'm sure it's been a difficult time and it's understandable that you may be feeling anxious about his upcoming surgery and what treatment options may be available to him.

We've quite a few members here who have had different types of oral cancers and I know some of them have undergone surgeries. I'm unsure if any of them had had carotid artery involvement but hopefully if we've any members who have had this then they will post to share their experiences with you.

You might want to consider giving our team of nurses a call to talk things through with them. I'm sure they will be able to offer some advice and support. If you'd like to speak to them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Do let us know how things progress.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi roisin,

im so sorry to hear. My dad had tonsil cancer 5 years ago and had a lump just near his caroid artery but not wrapped around. I'm sorry to hear about the rediagnosis. Nothing I can say will help but just know the consultants in today's world are incredible. He will get through this & your family will pull through. Sending love x

  • Hi I was wondering how your dad is getting on. My dad is 81 and beat vocal chord cancer in Decemberasg year. We found out it had spread to his lymph node just after christmas and its wrapped around his cartorid artery. They have said its inoperable and have suggested radiotherapy for 6 weeks. I am wondering if your father had the surgery. How are you and him coping. I feel so numb. We are so close. Any advice would be most appreciated. X
