Private Breast-conserving Surgery Cost??

Hi All,

I was wondering if someone would be able to help. My mother in law has recently been diagnosed with Breast cancer. She's been regularly in touch with her nurses and doctors and the next step is to have Breast-conserving surgery, however she currently lives in Swansea, and they are in lockdown so the surgeon's operations have all been cancelled. We are trying to find out how much this type of surgery would be to get done privately. I was hoping there would be someone on this website who would be able to give me an idea? Ive googled it and just cannot find a straight forward answer so would super appreciate someone to help me with this as we are desperate to get her the surgery before the cancer spreads, and we have no idea how long it is going to be before she can get it with the NHS.

Thanks xx

  • Hi Abbott123

I'm sorry to hear about your mother-in-law. My mum was recently diagnosed with breast cancer too. Due to coronavirus her initial mammogram & biopsy was continually post poned so we arranged for these to be done privately.

While I'm not sure how much surgery and reconstruction would be privately, the consultant at my Mum's private appointment said it would be 'eye watering, around the cost of a small extension'.

However, when I was first trying to organise a private appointment for my mum, I spoke to BUPA (just called their helpline) who pointed me in the direction of their private hospital search tool. This tool gave me a list of all private hospitals in my area that specialised in breast cancer (there are various filters and I'm very sorry to say I no longer have the link). I called a few different hospitals and the prices for a consultant appointment, mammogram, biopsy & ultrasound ranged considerably (from about £300 - £3000).

I'd suggest that your best bet to find out how much it would cost is to just call the hospitals directly as they were more than happy to tell me this information over the phone.

The private organisations I tried were:

    - Nuffield health

    - spire Wellesley (this was the one we went for & was fantastic)

    - Springfield/Broomfield

My Mum's breast nurse did say it is approximately 3 weeks to have surgery. If you want to have mascetomy/lumpectomy & reconstruction in the same operation the wait time is longer (about 2 months).

sorry couldn't be of more help!

  • @clm thankyou this was very helpful!!

  • Hello.

I am recently diagnosed and decided to have surgery private as I really did not want to wait.  It was around £7000 (gulp) for a lumpectomy and 1 overnight stay.  I wish your mother in law good luck x

  • Are you able to tell me whereabouts in the country you had the operation done Abbott123? My sister in law has recently had her mastectomy operation cancelled due to COVID pressure so desperately looking at private options. Many thanks

  • Hello all,

not sure if I am butting in here. Apologies if I am. Just to say I recently had a breast reduction done privately. It was to level up my breast with the one I had reduced owing to cancer in 2019.

It cost me £6,000. That included one night in the hospital. I never thought I would ever spend so much on private health but knew the NHS waiting list would be years rather than months. Granted it wasn't urgent at all but it's helped me move on and draw a line under my cancer experience. I now look 'normal' and back to how I was, well more or  less!! Very impressed with the service I received.

    Hope this helps.
