Hi, I've recently had surgery for hyperparathyroidism where they found a lymph node that was slightly dark around the edges. They did a biopsy and I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer.
After a lot of research, I decided that I wasn't keen on having a full thyroidectomy so I asked to have an ultrasound and a fine needle aspiration. Unfortunately my thyoid shows 6 nodules and one larger tumour around 3.5cm. I had the left hand side biopsied and they have come back showing atypical cells. I'm having the right hand side done tomorrow however they may also show atypical cells too and then I'll be expected to have the full thyroidectomy. I'm really not sure what to do. I'm so keen to do the active surviellence route and have regular scans however I'm concerned that this larger one might be the cancer in which case I should probably get it taken out. The risk is that may come back benign and then I'll have chosen the wrong side of the thryoid to get taken out. I'm feeling so anxious about all the uncertainty around what the best route to take is.
All I seem to read is horror stories about people feeling so unwell after full thryoidectomies and how it can take years to feel slightly better. Does anyone have any positive recovery stories? Is there any part of the UK that carries out core biopsies instead of fine needle aspirations? My endo said it's too risky as they can cause serious bleeds.
