Newly diagnosed with melanoma

Hi I have just been diagnosed with superficial spreading melanoma and have been told I will need further surgery. My doctor said I will be contacted by the hospital to arrange this but I haven't heard anything yet - does anyone know how long it usually takes to be contacted by them?

I am still in shock as I was told by multiple doctors that the mole I had removed didn't look sinister and they weren't concerned about it. I still don't know what stage it's at but apparently it's only in a thin layer. Is anyone going or been through anything similar?

Thanks,

Mathilda

  • Hello Mathilda and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. It's understandable that you're feeling in shock about the news that you were given.

It's worth getting in touch with your GP or the hospital to find out about waiting times for surgery. At least you will know then how long it may be.

We do have a lovely member here [@AngieT]‍ who I've tagged in to my repsonse. She has been living with melanoma for many years and I'm sure that she will be able to offer some advice and support.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses at any point then you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).

    Best wishes

  • Hi Mathilda,

I'm sorry you are still waiting for an appointment. I'm assuming from your post that your GP removed your mole and gave you the results rather than initially referring you to the hospital dermatologist? If that's the case, how long ago were you given the results?

In normal circumstances a GP would refer the patient to a dermatologist, usually under the 2 week rule. The dermatologist would then arrange an excision and biopsy by a Plastic Surgeon, usually within 2 or 3 weeks. If the results come back as melanoma, the dermatologist would then arrange a further appointment for  Wide Local Excision - this would usually be about 3 weeks later, however Covid means some patients are waiting anything up to 8 weeks for the procedure.

Because your GP has referred you for the WLE, your first appointment will be with the Plastic Surgeon for them to talk you through the procedure - you will then get an appointment for the WLE.

If you received your results more than 2 weeks ago I would contact your GP and ask what date the referral was sent and to which hospital (to ensure it's not been missed). Once you have the information, you can then ring the hospital and ask the Secretary if they have received the referral and if they can give you some idea as to when to expect an appointment date. Don't ring the hospital's central referral dept as they can't answer your query - it has to be the Secretary for the Plastic Surgery or Dermatology departments (whichever the GP has referred you to).

I hope this helps and you get an appointment through quickly. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.I
