Melanoma Diagnostic Pathology Report

Hi everyone

During lockdown I noticed a mole had changed and sent photos to my GP who originally dismissed it as a atypical mole. However I explained I was concerned and I was referred.

To cut a long story short I was diagnosed with stage 1a, 0.18mm which I have been told is thin. I've had the wider exercision and results have come back clear. Trying to stay positive and not over think but I think any back ache or pain means I've somehow jumped to stage 4!

I requested a copy of my pathology report and upon reading I can see that my mole was referred to two hospitals and the first report said they suspect it was either a severely dysplastic mole or a melanoma in situ with most favouring the former. The second report then came back to say it was actually stage 1a and 0.18mm. I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this or knows why there could be two different results? I've tried to find out more about how melanoma is diagnosed by specialists but there's not much information!

thanks in advance xx

  • Hi,

I'm so glad you pushed for it be removed, even though your results have given mixed information.

Even after 24 years with this disease I still don't know how the histologist measures the tissue samples to obtain the correct Staging. All I know is that the only difference between a melanoma in situ (Stage 0) and your Stage 1a is 0.18mm which is a very small measurement. Regardless of the slight difference in size, the treatment options are exactly the same and the prognosis is the same - approximately 95% of patients will be successfully treated and have no further problems. I don't know if they can help answer your question but you could contact the Specialist Cancer Nurse at dermatology or the Nurse Helpline at melanomafocus.com

    I hope this helps,

    Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient)
