Adjuvant therapy for melanoma

Hi

A few months ago I had a mole removed from my leg and it was diagnosed as malignant melanoma. I subsequently had a larger area of skin removed from my leg and a biopsy done on the sentinel lymph node in my groin, where a tiny amount of cancer cells were found. A CT scan has come back clear but the oncologist I was referred to says I am considered in a stage 3C risk category for recurrence. I have been offered a course of pembrolizumab as adjuvant therapy but was also made aware that this drug can cause some permanent side effects including loss of thyroid function.

I am generally in good health and have no symptoms from the melanoma so I am 50/50 at the moment about whether to undertake the therapy or not. I was wondering if anyone else here had undergone a course of pembrolizumab for melanoma or other cancers and if they had suffered any serious side effects.

Many thanks for any advice anyone is able to offer.

  • Hello brez66

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diganosis. I'm going to tag in one of our lovely members [@AngieT]‍ who has been living with a stage 3 melanoma diagnosis for many years. She is a fountain of knowledge!

We do have someinformation on our website about pembrolizumab which you may find helpful. If you use the forum search function to look for the term pembrolizumab you'll see that there are lots of posts where it's mentioned and you might find it helpful to have a look through some of those posts.

We also have a team of nurses here at CRUK that you're welcome to call to talk things through if you think it may help. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi brez66,

I'm sorry that I haven't been in the forum for a while and this reply may be late in your decision making.

I have been Stage 3b for 11 years now. Adjuvant Drug Therapy has only been available to newly diagnosed melanoma patients for the last 2 years so I haven't had any drug treatment and therefore have no personal experience of the side effects. I do, however, know a few people who have had or are currently on Pembro. I know that side effects are different for everyone - some suffer none or very mild effects whilst some can be quite harsh and resu!t in having to cease treatment.

Can I suggest that I send you a friend request - if you accept it I can chat to you by private message and pass on advice from those who have had such side effects.

    Good luck

    Angie
