Stage 4 Lung cancer

2 days ago I found out my dad has stage 4 lung cancer. It has spread to his spleen and liver and he has had am mri to check his bones and an ultrasound to check his bladder. No results back yet and still need to do a biopsy, he has underlying health problems also.

I have been his and my mums carer for the last 6 months as my mum is also seriously ill. I work full time and I'm married with 2 children age 13 and 9.

I am totally devastated and don't know how to deal with it all.

I'm going through the motions daily as I fell I need to be strong for everyone else.

Due to covid we are unable to visit him in the hospital and it kills me to see the pain my mum is dealing with.

  • Hi sotmum72, this is all too much for you to cope with, your Dad will be allocated a dedicated cancer McMillan nurse and you need to speak to her as soon as possible to lay out the facts of your situation.  Having cared for my Mum with dementia, then my husband's amputation of his leg and working full time I know you need help and my children were grown up and didn't live near us.  My husband now has incurable lung cancer so we've been dealing with that for 3 years. So be pro active before it all becomes even harder for you.  There is help available and you need to take it.  Your County Council should also run a carers scheme so e mail them for help.  Your parents GP should be made aware, get your parents to write a note saying you have permission to help them, lodge it with the practice and you won't go round in circles when you need medicines, more information or any of the many things they need, it saves a lot of time and energy, also get permission from Dad to be allowed to speak on his behalf during his cancer treatments. Take care and if you need more help message me on my Stay Strong page.  Carol x
