Skin cancer

two days ago I was diagnosed with a basil cell bcc and am currently waiting for an appointment at the hospital  I am concerned tho as I was told bcc was slow growing but mine has grown too 1.4cm in the space of two months. Am I am terrified that it will become much more serious the longer I wait to see someone in the hospital is it still highly treatable even if I need to wait the best part of a year to get the procedure done ?

  • I was just diagnosed with Sqaumous Cell Carcinoma. I heard basil cell is slow growing. Mine grew 1cm a week after it was removed- I'm not sure how fast they generally grow. Good Luck! I hope they remove it and you don't have to do anything else.

  • Hi,

BCC is slow growing and although it can spread wider on the skin the good thing is that it isn't invasive - so it may look unpleasant but it won't grow internally and will still be easily treatable.

Have the hospital given you some idea of the waiting time for a surgical appointment? Is the bcc on your face or on an area that's very noticeable and are the hospital aware that it's growing quicker than expected? Perhaps you could ring & tell them it's causing you embarassment & worry & they may put you higher on the list. Or tell them you are happy to take a last minute cancellation if one comes up? If the wait looks likely to be lengthy, another option is to ask your GP to see what other hospitals in your area have a shorter waiting list (if you are happy to travel further).

However long the wait, you certainly won't be waiting the best part of a year. My sister had one removed just before lockdown - she waited 2 months for the surgery. I know lockdown is causing more delay but in my area it appears to be about 6 months.

Good luck and I hope you receive treatment without too much delay,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
