New to all of this

Hi

i missed a routine mammogram in March due to Covid 19, I felt a slight bump in my left breast but did not want to burden the nhs so waited for normal service to resume, I had my mammogram and within a week a call back to hospital. That was yesterday, lots more squashing, met the surgeon who said that it was showing signs of cancer, had ultra sound - lymph nodes all clear - biopsies taken under ultrasound. I go back next Tuesday to discuss things, they have assigned a young registrar to follow my case. 
I guess this is what has happened to many of you here! But I think this will be the longest week of my life, what is the next stage?

    I'm sorry to hear that you've had some investigations this week for a breast lump. It's good to know that you have an appointment arranged for next week to get your results. 

    I know that lots of our members here will understand how difficult this period of waiting and uncertainty can be. 

    When you go to clinic on Tuesday the Dr should be in a position to confirm if the lump is cancerous or not and possibly be able to tell you what grade/type it is. Sometimes it can take a little longer for the hormone receptor status to come back but they may have that information as well. 

    It may be that the Dr says they want you to have some more tests such as an MRI, CT or PET scan. This isn't unusual so try not to worry too much if they mention these things. 

    It's great that your lymph nodes look clear on the ultrasound. That's certainly positive news. 

    We've lots of information on our website about breast cancer but I'd also siggest giving our team of nurses a call at some point. I know that they'll be able to offer you some support and advice. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

     the appointment went ok I guess! The surgeon had requested my husband be with me for it, so I kind of knew that it was not all clear! Anyway, lobular cancer, 2.5 Cm on mammogram, however the ultrasound indicated it is bigger, so waiting for an MRI, then surgery, either lumpectomy and radiotherapy or if that is too disfiguring or the tumour is bigger mastectomy and radiotherapy, some lymph nodes will be taken too just to check. He is hopeful I will not need chemo.

    so back to the waiting game!

    of course panicking about the other breast now, I guess the MRI will cover both?

    i have to call the breast clinic when I have the MRI date so they can give me appointment soon afterwards. I have chosen to self isolate too.
