Is oesophagectomy essential

Hi all,

My grey matter has been pondering again.....

My 56 yr old husband diagnosed with stage t2a n0m0 2 weeks ago. It is 2 cm  We’ve been told pre op chemo then oesophagectomy.

okay.

We have talked to a few people through Macmillan et al . They say the chemo is used to shrink the beast then chop.

but I am wondering (maybe pie in sky) that if the chemo shrinks it and little is left (fingers x) then what would

1) be the point of an oesophagectomy

2)could it be a partial one

3) could it be an endoscopic one

obviously we would like to avoid the oesophagectomy if poss.

Anyone experienced this type of thing

best wishes.

  • Hi Hilts,

Your husband's medical team would be the best people to answer your questions.

My dad died of this disease in April. He was diagnosed at stage 4 so he was not a candidate for surgery. My understanding is that an oesophagetomy is the curative treatment and you're in as fortunate position as you can be that the cancer has been caught early enough to be offered this (most are too advanced). Without surgery a tumor would continue to grow/spread once chemo had stopped.
