Secondary lung cancer - long wait for referral

Hi,

My Mum had a total nephrectomy in January which was deemed successful, her CT was clear and no further treatment needed.  She had her first CT at 6 months post op on 22nd June, the hospital appeared to have lost/missed her results which the GP chased and finally obtained 4th Aug, her case has been discussed at an MDT meeting 12th Aug and she has still had no contact from an Oncologist, her Urology Consultant told her by telephone on Friday that it is incurable and that he would refer her to an Oncologist.  I have written a complaint to PALs regarding the length of time that this has taken.  We are now 8 weeks post CT with no appointment or idea what will happen.  My question is is this normal?  Mum is 79 on Sunday and has been in excellent health until this year.  We have no idea where to turn and any advice would be gratefully received.

  • Hello jam1622,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry your mum's results have been delayed, but I'm glad they've been found. I hope your doctor gets in contact soon and gives your mum another appointment. If you need to speak to someone, we have a team of nurses available if you wish. You can call them for free on 0808 800 4040, lines are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you for getting back to me Anastasia & i for passing on your number.  Mum still has no information however PALs are now involved and we are hoping that this will very soon be resolved.  All we need is for Mum to have a telephone call telling her what might happen - even if all that she can be told is that this is a normal length of time to wait.  We are the kind of family who will make the best of what we have but while we still don't know what we have how can we?

It almost feels as though because she is elderly and incurable she has been dumped and isn't important - that hurts us all so much.

    Many thanks again.
